SURGICRYL MONOFAST (Poliglecaprone 25)

Background

MONOFAST has a unique absorption profile for a synthetic monofilament product is complemented by outstanding handling characteristics. It had been developed in response to the need for a synthetic product with a similar tensile strength retention profile to chromic catgut – the product it has replaced.

Description

MONOFAST (Poliglecaprone 25) is a monofilament synthetic absorbable suture material. It is a copolymer of 75% glycolide and 25% caprolactone

MONOFAST is undyed, presenting as a natural undyed colour. It is available on material gauge 6-0 through to gauge 1 and is available as needled sutures of different sutures lengths of 45 cm, 70 cm and 90 cm. It is also available as standard lengths of 1.5 m and 2.5m for ligation

MONOFAST provides wound support for about three weeks. It is noticeable that MONOFAST starts with a high initial strength.

The major benefit of MONOFAST is predictable loss of tensile strength over this three week period. This is achieved by systematic hydrolysis of the suture material

Mass Absorption

MONOFAST as a synthetic material is absorbed by the mechanism of hydrolysis in a predictable time period of 90-120 days.

Strength

MONOFAST is an extremely strong material being even stronger than PDO. This makes MONOFAST the strongest “out of packet” synthetic monofilament absorbable which is available. The straight pull strength is illustrated in the following diagram.

MONOFAST:              Summary

FEATURE ADVANTAGE BENEFIT
Monofilament construction No capillarity, no bacterial harbours

Smooth surface for easy passage through tissue

No fear of infection being transmitted or prolonged.

Confidence in minimal damage to tissue

High initial tensile strength Maximum strength during initial wound healing period Surgeon confidence in no risk of dehiscence during critical healing period
T.S.R. profile:

7 days: 50-60% T.S.R.

14 days: 20-30% T.S.R

Predictable strength retention during critical 14 day post-op period Surgeon has greater security and confidence than with catgut
Synthetic absorbable Absorption by hydrolysis, mass absorbed in 90-120 days

Reliable and predictable absorption

Tissue free of foreign body in 13 weeks, surgeon confident of lack of long term problems
Most pliable and flexible absorbable Very easy to handle and tie Surgeon convenience, easy and quick suture use
No out of package memory Straight suture dispensed Convenient to handle
Knot security is equal to other absorbable sutures Reliable knots Surgeon confidence in knotting a monofilament just like a braid.

Sterilisation

MONOFAST is sterilised with ethylene oxide

Surgical Applications

Surgeons are ultimately responsible for deciding where and when MONOFAST will be used.

However, experience derived from the United States and clinical data generated from European clinical trials suggest the high initial tensile strength and 3 week wound support.
